Mike Gartner was waiting, and hoping, by the right side of the net of the San Jose Sharks. Not long before, his Toronto Maple Leafs had come within inches of a historic and improbable end to their season. He was along the goal line, looking toward teammate Doug Gilmour behind the net. Gartner's temporary post did not seem the most opportune spot for the fifth-leading scorer in National Hockey League history, but with a season at risk and the pass headed his way, he took what he could get.
'Throw it at the net, and hope for the best,' Gartner remembered. Then he laughed. 'That's what I do all the time. What's different about that?'
What's different? How about the white Maple Leaf on his chest, and the hopes of the sellout crowd at Maple Leaf Gardens? And then there was that roomful of new teammates, whose season was extended at least one more game by Gartner's goal 8 minutes 53 seconds into overtime to give the Leafs a 3-2 victory over San Jose tonight to force a Game 7 in the Western Conference semifinal series. Ex-Ranger Plays the Hero
Gartner's score, at 8 minutes 53 seconds of overtime, tied the four-of-seven-game series at three victories each. The decisive meeting will be here Saturday night.
'We want to change the trend,' Gartner said. 'The trend has been for them to win a game and us to win a game. Now we want to break it.'
Less than two months since he was traded to Toronto from the Rangers, Gartner either postponed San Jose's second consecutive upset victory, or preserved the Maple Leafs' chances for their first Stanley Cup since 1967.
The Sharks, in their first playoff appearance at the end of their third season in the N.H.L., reached this round with a seventh-game victory over Detroit, the conference regular-season champion. Garpenlov Just Misses for Sharks
The Sharks nearly won this series when Johan Garpenlov hit the left post just 1:11 into the overtime.
Felix Potvin, the 22-year-old Toronto goaltender, heard the rubber strike the metal and for an instant waited to find out the rest.
Predators Vs Sharks Game 7
'You feel bad,' Potvin said. 'You can't wait to see the reaction of the fans. And then the play kept going. You feel good.'
Toronto received a second reprieve, 3:20 into the overtime, when San Jose defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh, in a 3-on-2 rush, chose to pass to his right toward Igor Larionov. when there was space to shoot in the slot between Leaf defensemen Jamie Macoun and Sylvain Lefebvre.
Gartner, who came to the Leafs from the Rangers on March 21 in the Glenn Anderson trade, helped start the winning play when he pried the puck loose along the right boards and sent it to Bob Rouse at the right point. Gilmour retrieved the carom of Rouse's shot behind the net, creating a problem for San Jose goaltender Arturs Irbe, who feared a wraparound attempt.
'Gilmour is tough behind the net,' Irbe said. 'So I just wanted to do the splits and sit down.'

But Gilmour made a quick pass. Irbe's left skate was pinned against the near post, but Gartner's jab struck the goaltender's right pad and slid into the net for the second overtime playoff goal of his career. Clarks Scores Two Goals
Toronto, which finished 16 points ahead of San Jose in the regular season, took a 2-1 lead at 5:32 of the third period on Wendel Clark's second goal of the game.
But the Sharks responded just 1:06 later when the former Islander defenseman, Jeff Norton, scored from the slot.
All that led to what may have been San Jose's best chance, and Gartner's best moment of the spring.
'Maybe when the whole playoffs are over, I'll look at it more in retrospect,' Gartner said. 'Right now, I'm looking at our hockey team. I'm not looking at myself. I'm just thrilled that we're in the position we're in right now.' SLAP SHOTS
Sharks Game 7 Score
The Sharks still have a chance to become the fourth team, in the 15 playoffs since the field was expanded to 16 teams in 1980, to overcome an eighth-place finish in its conference to reach the Stanley Cup semifinals. The three to accomplish the feat are Montreal (1984), the Rangers (1986) and Chicago (1989). . . . The first overtime playoff goal of MIKE GARTNER's career came with the Washington Capitals, in the second overtime of a division semifinal series against the Islanders on April 11, 1985.
